Pregnancy & Postpartum – Emily Barr Ruth, PsyD, LLC

Having a baby is one of the most amazing experiences in a person’s life. It can also be one of the most challenging. In today’s society, the difficult aspects of pregnancy, childbirth, and parenthood are often overlooked and minimized. Having a child is a huge life change! It can create many new stressors and can also re-trigger issues from the past. The CDC estimates that 12-20% of the population experiences a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder. Getting support during this critical time can make a difference not only in your life, but in the well being of your child and family.

I understand that dealing with these issues requires a combination of support and real life strategies. I offer support and help clients to understand the complexities of their unique situations. I also work collaboratively with them to identify practical solutions to issues like sleep deprivation, changes in relationships, time management, and relationship building with a new child. I know that there are many ways to parent, and I welcome and support parents of all cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations, and parenting philosophies.

Improving the diagnosis and treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD) is a high priority to me. I have received training from Postpartum Support International to provide specialized care for women and families living with these issues. I have been a regular speaker at Meriter’s Mother-Baby Hour and act as a clinical consultant to local postpartum peer support groups. Currently, I am participating in a task force with other local health care providers to improve awareness and treatment of PMAD in Dane County.
